Gigabit Networking in Norway Infrastructure, Applications and Projects
نویسنده
چکیده
Norway is a country with large geographical dimensions and a very low number of inhabitants. This combination makes advanced telecommunication services and distributed multimedia applications, like telemedicine and distance education, very important for the Norwegian society. Obviously, an appropriate networking infrastructure is necessary to enable such services and applications. In order to cover all important locations in Norway, this network represents a very large Wide-Area Network (WAN) within a single nation. This paper describes the Norwegian academic networking infrastructure, and gives an overview of Norwegian research institutions, programs, and projects. Furthermore, we describe in two case studies one examplary multimedia application and one ongoing research project in the area of gigabit networking and multimedia middleware.

Isochronous applications do not require jitter-controlled networks
An oft-stated goal of many of the ongoing gigabit networking research projects is to make it possible to support high bandwidth isochronous applications. An isochronous application is an application which must generate or process regular amounts of data at fixed intervals. Examples of such applications include telephones, which send and receive voice samples at regular intervals, and fixed rate...
متن کاملUsing High-Performance Networks to Enable Computational Aerosciences Applications
One component of the U.S. Federal High Performance Computing and Communications Program (HPCCP) is the establishment of a gigabit network to provide a communications infrastructure for researchers across the nation. This gigabit network will provide new services and capabilities, in addition to increased bandwidth, to enable future applications. An understanding of these applications is necessa...

O ne of the effective strategies for economic development of clusters is the conduct of networking activities by cluster members. Indeed, the majority of cluster members are micro and small enterprises, so, should attempt to overcome their inherent constraints and influence the market through networking activities. In addition, these enterprises lack an intra-firm research and develo...
متن کاملRf over Ethernet for Wireless Infrastructure
Existing interconnects between RF and processing hardware have been tightly integrated at a system bus level or have incorporated proprietary network hardware, usually tied to the particular data being transported. This paper describes a system taking advantage of commodity Gigabit Ethernet to provide a flexible sample interconnect. Using off the shelf hardware provides flexibility at low cost ...
